How Over Combat Font Transformed My Brand's Visual Identity

It was a quiet Tuesday morning when I sat down with my latest batch of custom candle labels. The design felt off—too modern, too clean. I wanted something that spoke to the soul of my brand: warmth, tradition, and a touch of old-world charm. That’s when I stumbled upon Over Combat, a blackletter font with a classic, medieval style.

The moment I saw it, I knew it was different. Thick, sharp lines and decorative details gave it a dramatic flair that instantly made me think of parchment, ink, and stories from long ago. It wasn’t just a font—it was a mood. And that mood matched exactly what I wanted for my candles.

A Font That Feels Like Home

Over Combat has this timeless quality that makes it feel both vintage and bold. The thick strokes and intricate serifs give it a handcrafted look, perfect for anything that needs to stand out without screaming for attention. I used it on my candle jars, and suddenly, the labels felt like they belonged in a boutique shop rather than a discount bin.

I also tried it on my website banners and social media posts. The contrast between the heavy blackletter and the soft pastel colors I use in my branding created a visual rhythm that drew people in. It didn’t just look good—it felt intentional.

From Labels to Menus: Where Can You Use Over Combat?

I started experimenting with Over Combat across different parts of my business. Here are some of the places it worked best:

One of my favorite uses was on my holiday gift box packaging. The title “Holiday Candle Collection” in Over Combat immediately caught the eye and made the box feel special.

Why Typography Matters More Than You Think

I used to think fonts were just about making things look pretty. But after switching to Over Combat, I realized how much typography affects first impressions. A well-chosen font can make your brand feel more trustworthy, professional, and memorable.

When customers see consistent typography across your packaging, website, and social media, it builds recognition. It tells them, “This is who we are.” And with Over Combat, I could tell a story through design without ever saying a word.

Readability was also a concern at first. I worried that the bold, decorative style might be hard to read on small labels. But when used appropriately—like for short titles or headings—it actually enhances legibility by creating strong visual anchors.

Picking the Right Pairings

Fonts don’t have to work alone. I found that pairing Over Combat with a clean sans serif font, like Helvetica or Arial, helped keep everything balanced. The blackletter font became the hero, while the sans serif handled the supporting text.

For a more elegant look, I’ve also used it alongside an elegant serif font like Georgia or Times New Roman. The contrast between the two styles added depth to my designs without overwhelming the viewer.

If you’re going for something more playful, try using it with a script or handwritten font. Just be careful not to overdo it—less is more when it comes to typography.

Before You Choose Over Combat

Before settling on Over Combat, I checked the file formats, included styles, and licensing options. It came with a variety of weights and alternates, which gave me flexibility in how I used it. I also made sure the font had commercial licensing so I could use it on product packaging and digital downloads without any issues.

Another thing to consider is whether the font supports multiple languages. If you're targeting international customers, that’s important. Fortunately, Over Combat covers most common characters, which made it easier to use across different platforms.

Finally, I tested the font on various mediums—print, web, mobile—to ensure it looked good everywhere. It performed well on small labels, large banners, and even in digital ads. That versatility made it a solid choice for my brand.

Typography might seem like a small detail, but it can make a big difference in how your brand is perceived. With Over Combat, I found a font that not only looks great but also helps tell the story of my business in a way that feels authentic and timeless.
